Polish investigates the connections between craft and the erotics of the body. This short video follows the autoerotic reproductive process of a large, solid glass ball. Exploiting the dance inflections and inherent sexual suggestion of the glassmaking process, it follows the ball through its dripping beginnings into its second life as a fetish object-cum-sculpture. The wet, pink grinding (the process of grinding and polishing finished glass objects) echoes the ball’s original orange, molten state. These productive processes of glassmaking are translated in the ball’s final life as a sculpture by a kinetic spanking machine. Its arm erratically hits the twanging spring that holds the harnessed ball in bouncing place. The female body and pregnancy are both implicated within art/craft-making as both the assertive subject and erotic object.
